Turning back time to when I had an online shop, seven&eight home, it coincided pretty much with the birth of my first child and the two were not conducive. I know lots of people do it, but it was such a struggle, trying to type emails whilst feeding a baby....after three pretty stressful years one of them had to go.............to be honest, I'm a crap business woman, I just liked sourcing the stock which lets face it, is the easy bit. The other thing that was tricky and I'm sure continues to be for lots of people with only an online presence, it so hard to 'see' the quality, these items are so much about 'feeling' it, engaging with the product on a more personal level. It is amazing the design quality that is available on the High Street - @hmhome is brilliant, which obviously includes @arketofficial and @cosstores and of course @ikeauk , but it makes it so hard for the small business to compete, and difficult for the customer to comprehend the price difference for something that perhaps doesn't look that different in comparison. What you're paying for is the passion, the uniqueness, the fatigue, the materials, the authenticity, the ideas, the hours of getting it just right, the failures and the successes, before someone comes to the studio sale, picks up a piece and sends it off to China to be copied. Don't get me wrong, good design should be accessible to all and hopefully there is room for everyone, but there is a reason that handmade, and small production runs cost more.
